WHO WILL YOU BECOME?
In life you have a choice to decide who you will become, and how you will turn out. So you should always have in mind who you will become, as this will to a large extent determine how you live your day to day life.
While we do not have the power to
choose the country we were born in, or the family we were born into, but as we
grow up and responsibility starts setting in, we will make some choices, we
will choose our friends, our career path, how we respond to issues and
challenges, who we will become, and a whole lot of
other things.
As young people growing up, this
applies to all of us, no matter who you are or where you are from, in our
childhood there was no sense of responsibility until we attained a certain age,
when we needed food, it was the job of our parents to provide for food, to
provide for clothes, and to provide for all the other things that we needed. It
was with time that responsibility started to set in, for me I think it was in
primary school that I started thinking about my results and my grades, that I
needed to do well or I will be punished, then into secondary school, more
responsibilities came in, I started thinking beyond just passing exams and
doing well in class, I started thinking about the future, what do I want to do,
who do I want to become?
Dear friend, the choice all of us
must make as we grow up in life is the choice of who will I become? There are
two ways in which we all will end up, it’s either we end up good or we end up
bad, there is no middle ground. It’s either we turn out successful or
otherwise, it’s either we come out tops or bottom, all of us, every single one
of must go the way of one of both options.
While growing up in my primary school
and secondary school days, there were some older people in my area that I was
looking at; I was between the age of 10 and 16 years old, and these were folks
in their late 20s and early 30s, it was at that age that I really began
thinking about who I will become. There were some of those older folks that I
was looking at and I was wishing I will like to be like this when I grow up,
always well dressed, upwardly mobile, with a decent job, they were bankers then
majorly, young men, well dressed. On the other hand there were older folks I
prayed I don’t want to end up like, I saw them around too, maybe they were
drinking, always idle, roaming the streets, at times drinking and smoking all
over the place, always at newspaper stands arguing and making the loudest
noise. I never wanted to become them, so I knew I had to make a choice on who I
will become, and I need to move in the direction I desire.
I knew it was only a matter of time
before I end up in one of both categories. Then, I thought that in the next 10
years to 15 years, I would either be the successful bros in my area that the
younger ones will look at and will desire to be like me, or I would be the
liability bros, that they will look at, and say; God forbid, I don’t want my
life to be like his own. I had a choice to make on who I will become and I made
the right choice. A choice to live a worthy life, a choice to be the best I can
be, a choice to make the most of my existence, a choice to not be a bad
example.
There are good examples that people
want to be like, and there are bad examples that people don’t want to be like;
who will you be? A mother was correcting her 15 year old boy on a certain day,
then she asked him; or do you want your life to be like Uncle so and so? The
boy answered No ooooooo. Now, the Uncle so and so is not a worthy example,
there was nothing to be desired of him, and that was why the 15 year old boy
could say that he does not wish to have that kind of life.
Now to the younger ones growing up, I
always tell them, and please tell them too; I always tell them that; see. You
have a life to live, your future is in front of you, it’s all bright and clear,
it’s all nice and beautiful. But you have a choice to make, you will have to
choose who you will become in the next 10 years, in the next 20 years, in the
next 30 years, it’s all on you, and the choices and decisions you make today
will ultimately contribute to who you will be.
I wish you the best now and always!
