DRESS LIKE A PROSPECT AND NOT A
SUSPECT
Perhaps you have heard of these
timeless words before; “the way you
dress is the way you are addressed”, those words are as old as old itself,
they are as timeless are time itself, passed down overtime from generation to
generation, but they still holds true up till this day. How you dress matters,
how you appear matters, people will relate with you based on first impression,
how they see you dressed determines how they relate with you.
I addressed a group of Entrepreneurs
recently, and one of the things I told them is that they need to pay attention
to the way the dress and appear, when they have meetings and presentations,
they should realize that the way they dress matters, always dress like a
prospect and not a suspect. I mean except you are going to the pool, or the
beach, or the picnic, you must always at all times dress well, because you
don’t know you might meet, you don’t know who you might run into, and you
better be prepared in your dress sense and not caught unawares.
I am working on a PR Campaign now where I will be addressing different
groups; business groups, entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs,
undergraduates, and various youth groups, on helping people present themselves
better in public, dress well and make decent appearances, I am not talking about being a
fashionista or dressing like a model, but simply about dressing well and
looking good, “looking good is good business”. You can get in touch with me if you will like to be a part of it, or
if you will like to invite me to address a group of people. It is important you
always dress like a prospect and not a suspect.
A young guy had been calling me for
some time, wanting to see me, eventually I set up a meeting; he appeared in
denim, sagged, with a polo top, and the collar was upright, he was trying to
make a presentation, telling me he wanted to do this and that, he needed my
advice and my help, after a few minutes, I told him I had other things to do,
and that was the end of the meeting. I mean, you are not going to a lawn tennis
court, you are not going to a stadium, so why not dress decently for the
meeting you are having and the presentation you want to make. If you are going
to visit a friend or going to the gym, I don’t have any issue even if you put
on a shorts with an armless top, but if you are meeting someone for the first
time, or you are making a presentation, please dress decently, like a prospect
and not like a suspect.
A Public Relations expert I
interviewed was telling me that if someone walks up to him for the first time,
he decides on what he will do with that person within the first three seconds,
this is it; he judges first based on what he sees, how the person is dressed,
then afterwards he listens to whatever it is the person has to say, but the
first three seconds will be a make or break for the person, he will conclude in
his heart if he will honour the person’s proposal or if he will throw it into
the trash bin, although he will listen to whatever it is the person has to say,
but he has already made up his mind on how he will respond to whatever proposal
the person has brought. This tells you a lot about appearance; this is why some
people will go for a job interview or submit a proposal, but they never get
called back. A guy was telling me he felt so free discussing with the panel of
interview, he had confidence he will get the job, but 9 months after, they
refused to call him, I told him, immediately you walked in, they decided on you
already, so chatting with them and you all throwing banters and shining your
teeth together does not make any difference, they have decided what they will
do.
So dear friend, please always learn to dress like a prospect and not a
suspect.
