Go to the Ant
King
Solomon no doubt is the wisest man that ever lived on the face of planet earth,
his wisdom is so astonishing both in his words and in his action that he
completely epitomizes unadulterated wisdom, and thousands of years after he has
gone, his words still remains with us, still shedding light and providing
insight for our day to day living. Words like; “trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not on your own
understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and he shall direct your paths”,
“the gifts of a man makes room for him
and makes him stand before kings and great men”. But one of my favorites,
my absolute all time favorite quote of his was when he said; “Go to the Ant, thou sluggard, consider her ways and be
wise”.
Solomon
bypasses the Elephant despite its huge size, he overlooks the Lion in all its
Majesty, he ignores the Cheetah with its incredible speed, he sets aside all of
them, the antelope, the giraffe, the buzzing bee, the beautiful butterfly, and
he stoops so low to the level of the ant, “go to the ant”, he said. That means
there must be something about the ant.
Well,
I took a trip and I went to the ant, and here are some of its characteristics
that I picked up, let us look at the ant together and consider its ways,
perhaps we will learn a thing or two.
1.
The Ant works for itself;
the ant works tirelessly, I have never seen an ant loafing around or staying
still (except it is dead), it’s always on the move, a move to achieve
something, a move to a productive end, either looking for food, or dragging food
to the store house, ants always busy themselves with tiny tasks to accomplish
big results. We need to have the same attitude as well, we should prepare
ourselves and always do what needs to be done; here a little, there a little, I
will do what I have to do, it’s on me to make it happen, it’s my responsibility
to do something with my life.
2.
The Ant gathers food in the time of
abundance in preparation for the time of scarcity; this tiny
creature doesn’t eat with all its fingers, it keeps and saves food for when
there will be none, it plans ahead for when scarcity hits town. Dear friend,
let us do likewise, we should plan our lives ahead, we should get our lives
ready in advance, we should be ahead of the game, we should be ready for what
we don’t need right now. Be dressed for where you are going.
3.
The Ant is organized; talk
about a set of very organized creatures, and you are talking about the ant. I
still recall when as a little lad I’ll turn over a piece of wood or a rock, and
see hundreds of ants scurry for safety, running helter-skelter, if you disrupt
their lives, it results in pure chaos, but within minutes, you will see them
back in line, restoring and rebuilding their lives. You and I need to have that
kind of approach to life, we should be organized, if anything comes up
unexpectedly and disrupts our setup, we should reorganize and get ourselves
back on track, be it in our business, career, academics, or personal life, we
should always be organized.
4.
The Ant is industrious; how
many times have you seen an ant take a piece of bread or biscuit bigger than
itself, it drags it and doesn’t give up, if it cannot get it done alone, it
will call on others and they will achieve that task together, but the ant will
never give up, the ant is determined. Have that determination as well as you
begin to approach your future, forge ahead, go with your dreams, I know it’s
big, it’s bigger than you, but it’s yours and you’ve got to drag it in. Don’t
stop until you achieve your dreams, sink your teeth into it, be resolute, be
determined, be dogged and DO NOT GIVE UP!
Those
are a few lessons we have learnt from the ant, let’s take the positive from this
tiny creature and make the most of our lives. I wish you Godspeed!
