Bits and Pieces

One of the things I learnt very early in life is doing tasks in bits and pieces, getting so much done by taking it one step at a time. I recall this happened when a lady shared her story with me... She and the husband organized a get together for family, friends, and little children on a Wednesday evening, after the event and everybody had gone back to where they all came from, the house was so messed up and dirty, everywhere was upside down (many thanks to those little angels who came around with their parents, they made sure they helped her scatter the house "well well"). Her husband travelled the following day to be back on Saturday and they had another meeting to host on that Saturday, he left with a plea to the wife to help tidy up the house and make it sparkling before his arrival on Saturday. The lady said when everybody left, she was so exasperated and overwhelmed by the workload of cleaning and rearranging the house and she didn't know where to start from, she
decided there and then that she was going to leave everything till Saturday morning and invite a few friends over so they could do the clean up together. She said she woke up the following morning and she felt she could actually tidy up only the kitchen today and reduce the work load at least and sanitize a part of
the mess, but the sitting room is a no no as she will definitely require extra hands to confront the disorganization there. She said she cleaned up the kitchen and decided to touch another part of the house, and by the end of Thursday, she had achieved much already. She was already fired up for the next day. By Friday she decided to take up another part of the house, and then another part, and then the dreaded disorganized sitting room. By Day 2, everywhere inside the house was already taken care of. So by the time Saturday came, she had only little work to do and according to her, the surprising part was that she didn't need to invite any of her friends over for clean up.
By midday, the husband arrived, everywhere was set, the house was well taken care of, and it was ready for the event of the evening.

Now following the discussion, I picked up a very valuable lesson... When you look at tasks or projects as they are as a whole, there is every tendency for you to be overwhelmed, and the sad thing is as human beings, we will tend to postpone and keep postponing until a rather convenient time which may never arrive. But I always tell people that it's imperative you pick up the gauntlet and start anyhow, anyway. To me, that's where the theory of bits and pieces come in. My dear friend, I want you to know that you can achieve any task, and you can get anything done. Don't wait until you have all the time and resources in the world to get a particular task done, or to kick-start that project or business endeavour. Just start by taking one step after another, get things done by approaching them one at a time. Don't wait till you have all the millions before you think of pursuing your business plan, the truth is if that be the case, you may have to wait for a long time, I mean look at for how long you've been waiting. Rather I will humbly suggest that you begin where you are and with what you have. I remember I met a guy who told me he wanted to set up a business and he needed a capital of about #600,000. I asked him how long he had been nursing the plan and saving the money, he said it's been over 3 years, I asked what he's been doing, he said he isn't doing anything, matter of fact he can't do anything until he has the money, and there's another guy who started his life and business with just over #35,000, and he is improving gradually, and making steady progress, while the other dude who wants to start big with #600,000 is still on the same spot. Approach life with the concept of bits and pieces, move forward by taking one step at a time. This way, you'll start MAKING THINGS HAPPEN, and you'll surely get things done. I wish you the very best.
